FAQs

Is True Therapy trauma-informed?

Yes. Trauma-informed care is at the heart of our work. This means we approach therapy with an understanding of how past and present experiences can influence emotions, relationships, behaviors, and the nervous system.

Our goal is to create a collaborative environment that emphasizes emotional safety, choice, empowerment, and respect for your lived experience.

Do I have to talk about my trauma?

No. Trauma therapy does not mean you have to immediately discuss painful experiences in detail. Therapy may begin with strengthening coping skills, increasing emotional awareness, building safety, understanding patterns, and developing tools to manage distress. You remain an active participant in deciding what is discussed and when.

What therapy approaches do you use?

Our therapists integrate approaches based on each client's individual needs. Treatment may include trauma-informed, attachment-focused, cognitive behavioral, acceptance-based, relational, mindfulness, and nervous-system-informed strategies. Your therapist can talk with you about the approaches being used and why they may help you reach your goals.

Do you work with parents and mothers?

Yes. Supporting parents and mothers is an important part of our practice. Parenthood can bring joy while also creating significant changes in identity, relationships, expectations, stress levels, and emotional needs.

Therapy can provide a space to care for the person behind the parenting role, not just focus on how to become a "better parent."

Do you provide couples therapy?

Yes. Couples therapy can support partners who want to strengthen communication, better understand relational patterns, navigate conflict, rebuild connection, or work through significant transitions. Our approach focuses on understanding the relationship rather than assigning blame to one partner.

Do you provide family therapy?

Yes. Family therapy may help families strengthen communication, understand recurring patterns, navigate transitions, repair relationships, and increase connection. Treatment is tailored to the needs, developmental stages, and goals of each family.

Do you work with military members, veterans, and military families?

Yes. We understand that military-connected life can bring unique experiences related to deployment, relocation, separation, reintegration, caregiving, identity, relationships, and trauma. Therapy provides a confidential space to explore those experiences while honoring each person's individual story. One of our therapists is also a veteran, bringing both clinical expertise and a personal understanding of military culture and some of the unique experiences that can come with military life.

Is therapy offered virtually?

Yes. True Therapy offers secure telehealth sessions for clients who are physically located in states where their therapist is licensed to practice. Virtual therapy allows you to attend sessions from a private and comfortable location while receiving the same individualized clinical support.

How long are therapy sessions?

Most individual therapy sessions are approximately 45–60 minutes. Session length and frequency may vary depending on clinical needs, treatment goals, therapist recommendations, and insurance requirements.

How often will I attend therapy?

Many clients begin with weekly sessions, although frequency is individualized. Some clients may benefit from a different schedule depending on their needs, progress, availability, and treatment goals. You and your therapist will regularly discuss what level of support feels clinically appropriate.

How long will I need therapy?

There is no universal timeline for therapy. Some people seek short-term support around a specific concern, while others benefit from longer-term therapy to address complex patterns or experiences. Treatment is collaborative, and we believe in regularly reviewing progress and discussing whether your current level of care continues to meet your needs.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes: Tricare East, Aetna, and Cigna Evernorth

Can I use out-of-network benefits?

Depending on your insurance plan, you may be eligible for reimbursement for out-of-network mental health services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to ask about your specific benefits.

Coverage and reimbursement are determined by your insurance company and cannot be guaranteed by True Therapy.

Is what I share in therapy confidential?

Yes. Protecting your privacy is an important part of therapy. Information shared during treatment is generally confidential. There are specific legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality, including certain situations involving immediate safety concerns or mandated reporting requirements. Your therapist will review confidentiality and its limits with you at the beginning of treatment.

Can I contact my therapist between sessions?

Your therapist will discuss appropriate methods for contacting them between appointments. Email, phone, or client portal communication should generally be used for scheduling and routine matters rather than urgent clinical needs. Because therapists may not be able to respond immediately, these communication methods should not be used for emergencies.

What if I am experiencing a mental health emergency?

True Therapy is an outpatient therapy practice and does not provide emergency or crisis-response services.

If you are experiencing an immediate mental health or medical emergency, feel unable to remain safe, or believe someone else may be in immediate danger, please contact emergency services or seek care through your nearest emergency department or local crisis resource.
